THE FILM WAS RELEASED IN 1959 AND HAS AN EXISTENTIAL "BEAT-ISH" FEEL. THE LOOSE NARRATIVE IN THE FILM DEALS WITH HUGH AN OLDER, DARKSKINNED AND UNSUCESSFUL BLACK MAN AND HIS TWO YOUNGER LIGHTSKINNED MIXED RACE SIBLINGS, BROTHER BENNY ( who can get it) AND SISTER LEILA.

THE MOVIE IS VERY SUBTLE IN HOW IT DEALS WITH RACE, EVERY CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE IS A "BOHEMIAN" OF SOME KIND AND SO RACIAL BOUNDARIES ARE BLURRED OFTEN FOR THE 50'S AND YET BENNY AND LEILA FLIRT EASILY BETWEEN WHITE CULTURE BECAUSE THERE COMPLEXIONS ALLOW THEM TO PASS. Well folks, you know you've said it and heard it all too many times. From the chit-chatting gossip mongrels of the media to the spicy tongues of street children(s)...everyone seems to know whats "REAL" out there. But really do we FO' SURE know the whole story? Or are we so jaded that even whats real looks like reality t.v? So you get your REAL news from CNN? Or perhaps, you're don't wanna be bothered with that whole middle east thing, and you wanna be local. The 10'o clock news suits you just fine. I mean you really just wanna get the 5-day forecast, cause you need to know if you're gonna need to pack that umbrella. Besides you wanna deal with the real world, which really means your world, and better yet your REALITY.
You first heard about the "Real World" probably sometime in high school. At that time the real world as so frankly put forth by our parents, seemed unforgiving, cold and quite dangerous. "....when you get out to the real world...!" This was the line that started and ended many heated topics. Many a teenager said "Fuck the real world, I am gonna make my own reality..." And many of us did. We said where gonna make this OUR life. So we bought/found the look: clothes, music, books, ideologies, friends, gadgets....the tools to aide us in this reality. And as we progressed, the reality kept morphing us till we reached the present state...for an X number of time. REPEAT! Yes its an endless cycle. Buddhists have been claiming this for centuries, on how we endlessly reincarnate until we reach enlightenment...or is that historically fancy for "Keepin it real...?" Being a fashion/lifestyle photographer I always have a supporter saying, "Oh...he keeps it real..." But no, my work is based on reality, yet its totally not real. Its all contrived...maybe I should direct a show on VH1 or BRAVO? No... "I Love New York" Scott Baio, Salt n Pepa, Brett Michaels, Tila Tequila, The Shot, America's Next Supermodel, Top Model, Fashion Designer, Top Chef, Design Star, The Orange County Housewives, that trainer bitch, theres Kimora... gawwd the parents were right, the REAL world is scary and very competitive. I mean I watch all of these realities. Oh and Myspace, and YouTube too! I just can't choose one! But maybe whats happening is that I secretly wanna live my life with those "learned" realities...I mean who doesn't wanna be KIMORA! I wanna live the "Fabulous" life...! Isn't that what this is teaching us, is to mimic a worpped reality that is today? The hustle, the game, the prize, the ratings, the headlines in HELVETICA? Or just a Real one? Whatever its a blurrr...Reality that is. Right? SA
